Christmas comes to Grays

Grays High Street Christmas Tree lights will be officially switched on by the Deputy Mayor of Thurrock Council at a special event on Monday 9 December.
Cllr Sue Shinnick, Deputy Mayor of Thurrock, said: “I am really looking forward playing my part in helping to bring the joy of Christmas to Grays High Street by switching the Christmas tree lights on this year.
“I would especially like to thank DP World London Gateway who have supplied the tree this year. It is great that we have been able to work with them to support Christmas in Grays Town Centre.

Cllr Mark Hooper joins primary school pupils for tree planting day

Cllr Mark Hooper, Cabinet Member for Health and Well-being, joined pupils from Stifford Clays Primary School to plant trees as part of National Tree Week.
On Thursday 28 November, three trees were planted at Blackthorn Park in Stifford Clays.
The trees were provided by Thurrock Council and pupils were supported with the planting by the council's arboriculture team.
Pupils from Stifford Clays Primary School were involved throughout the planning process, with 18 children aged five to 11 from their school council choosing the types of trees that would be planted.

Cabinet Members join community engagement session to raise awareness of Gender-Based Violence

Cabinet Members and Councillors joined Thurrock Council's Community Safety team to speak to residents about Gender-Based Violence.
It is estimated that almost one in three women have been subjected to physical and/or sexual intimate partner violence, none-partner sexual violence, or both at least once in their lives.
As part of the UN Women's 16 Days of Activism campaign against Gender-Based Violence, Thurrock Council hosted two community engagement sessions at South Essex College and Grays Train Station on Thursday 28 November.

Applications open for new Coalhouse Fort Advisory Group

Thurrock Council are seeking applications for members of a new Coalhouse Fort Advisory Group to help offer advice and move forward with the future plans for Coalhouse Fort, East Tilbury.
Up to 12 volunteers will be selected.

Storm Bert leads to busy weekend for highways teams

Thurrock Council’s highways teams had a busy weekend over Saturday 23 and Sunday 24 November as they cleared tree sand branches blocking roads and footpaths.
In all the team attended and cleared 23 obstructions as Storm Bert hit Thurrock.
Thurrock Council is responsible for over 350 miles of roads along with pavements, traffic signs, guardrails, road markings and other street furniture in the borough.
Weather and cold conditions are monitored and crews are on stand-by to help keep the borough moving.

Family Hubs raise more than £290 for BBC Children in Need

Families joined in the fun at several of Thurrock Council’s Brighter Futures Family Hubs and helped raise more than £290 for BBC Children in Need.
From Wednesday 13 to Friday 15 November, hubs in Aveley, Chadwell St Mary, South Ockendon, Purfleet-on-Thames, Stanford-le-Hope and Tilbury held events including Pudsey and Peppa Pig parties, arts and crafts sessions, cake and pre-loved toy sales and a raffle.

Pupils in Thurrock catch speeding offenders

Last week (Thursday 21 November), Thurrock Council's Road Safety Team were joined by Essex Police at Benyon Primary School in South Ockendon to teach pupils about road safety.
School Crossing Patrol Officers wore vibrant uniforms with 'Stop Means Stop' messaging to remind drivers of their responsibility when encountering school crossing patrols.
Year Five pupils were accompanied by an Essex Police Officer to take part in a school speed watch event outside of the school on West Road, South Ockendon to check for potential speeding offenders.

Thousands in Thurrock attend online safety event

Students and teachers from across Thurrock came together to learn about digital safety during the Walk Online Road Show.
The annual event took place at Civic Hall, Blackshots in Grays on Tuesday 19 and Wednesday 20 November.
This year saw its largest turnout, with 2,600 Year Five students and 256 teachers and adults in attendance.

Thurrock Council to host community engagement session to raise awareness of Gender-Based Violence

As part of the UN Women 16 Days of Activism campaign against Gender-Based Violence, Thurrock Council will host two community engagement sessions on Thursday 28 November.
These sessions are aimed at building connections within the community, raising awareness of Violence Against Young Women and Girls (VAWG), and sharing important resources to enhance public safety and support.
Members of the council will be joined by partners from the VAWG board, who will provide information, answer questions, and offer resources to those attending.
