Thurrock joins hundreds of council landlords asking government to safeguard council housing

Thurrock Council has joined more than 100 council landlords urging the government to back five key recommendations needed to renew England's council housing system.
Cabinet Member for Health and Well-being and Housing, Cllr Mark Hooper, attended an event in Westminster on Tuesday 3 September to lend Thurrock Council's support to the requests put to the government.

In response to the publication of the final report from the Grenfell Tower inquiry yesterday (Wednesday 4 September), Cllr Mark Hooper, Cabinet Member for Health and Well-being and Housing, said: "This is a hugely important and long-awaited report that we will read carefully, to ensure we continue to learn the lessons of the Grenfell Tower tragedy in London, and keep our Thurrock tenants and leaseholders safe.

Thurrock marks Merchant Navy Day

Thurrock Council marked Merchant Navy Day by raising the Red Ensign Flag at a special event on Tuesday 3 September.
The event was opened with a prayer and speeches from Mayor of Thurrock, Cllr Kairen Raper, and Cabinet Member for Community Partnerships, Cllr Valerie Morris-Cook and saw Thurrock MP Jen Craft raise the Red Ensign flag to recognise our past and present seafarers and celebrate the contribution that they have made to the freedoms we enjoy today.

Have your say to help nature thrive

A new consultation is asking residents to comment on key locations and strategies that will help nature thrive and benefit the wider environment.
The Essex Local Nature Recovery Strategy (LNRS), which includes Thurrock, asks residents to share their views on the best ways to help nature have an opportunity to recover.
Cllr Lee Watson, Cabinet member for Good Growth, said: "This strategy will help us to identify the key areas where natural habitats and wildlife can flourish, and in turn enhance the borough's environment.

Coalhouse Fort is set to re-open its doors

Historic Coalhouse Fort in East Tilbury is set to re-open its gates to visitors for the first time in 4 years as surveys get underway to identify what works are required to return the fort to its former glory.
A series of open days will also take place at Coalhouse Fort, giving residents with an interest in history an opportunity to have their say on how it should be run in the future.

Successful enforcement case leads to removal of eyesore in neighbourhood

Thurrock Council is pleased to announce the successful resolution of a recent enforcement case that highlights the critical role our enforcement team plays in maintaining the aesthetic standards of our Borough.
An unauthorised brick wall was constructed on a modern estate in East Tilbury, creating an eye-sore for neighbours and local residents.

Celebrations in Purfleet-on-Thames for Gurkha war memorial

Last Sunday (18 August), the Thurrock Nepalese (Gurkha) Community unveiled Thurrock's first Gurkha war monument at Purfleet Heritage and Military Centre. Funded by the Thurrock Nepalese (Gurkha) Community, the monument, known as The Gurkhas' Memorial Thurrock, is the first to include the names of all 26 soldiers, 13 Nepalese and 13 British, serving with Gurkha regiments who have received the Victoria Cross.

Meet our Summer Reading Challenge volunteer

The Summer Reading Challenge is a fantastic way of keeping kids reading and entertained over the summer holidays. Its aim is to inspire children to become storytellers and makers by encouraging them to read for pleasure and develop their creative thinking skills.
Running from Saturday 13 July to Saturday 7 September 2024, children are challenged to read 6 library books over the summer with the chance to win cool prizes and medals for completing the challenge.

Annual electoral canvass begins

23 August 2024
Residents are being encouraged to ensure they are registered to vote as Thurrock Council begins its annual electoral canvass.
Between Friday 23 August and Sunday 15 September, households across the borough will receive a form requesting that occupants verify the accuracy of the information on the electoral register.
Residents must advise the council if any changes to the details of the form are needed, or confirm the details are correct if the form is requesting a response to be given.

Students receive GCSE results

Thousands of students across Thurrock received their GCSE results today, Thursday 22 August. 
Cllr Vikki Hartstean, Cabinet Member for Children's Services and Education, said: “It was wonderful to visit Grays Covent High School and The Hathaway Academy this morning to talk with some of the students who were receiving their GCSE results to hear all about their hard work and what they have planned for the future.
“I know some young people may be nervous about leaving secondary school and may be unsure of what route to take for their next steps.
