Guide to applying
Guidance on applying for an installation over the highway is provided below.

When to submit your application
When applying for an installation over the highway, you should make sure that:
- the application is submitted at least 8 weeks before your intended installation start date
- applications for Christmas decorations are submitted before 31 August
Documents to be submitted with your application
Your application should include the following documents:
- an outline map showing the location, including column numbers and installation details
- an installation method statement – include a traffic management proposal, if relevant
- evidence of public liability insurance – £10 million minimum
- proof of competency and qualifications of the contractor's operatives
- a risk assessment
Where applicable, the risk assessment should cover:
- installation
- maintenance
- temporary traffic management proposals
- arrangements for protection and segregation of the public
- signing, guarding and final removal of installed items
Proof of competency and qualifications of the contractor's operatives could include, for example:
- risk assessments
- method statements for the operation
- copies of accreditation certification, such as New Roads and Street Works Act (NRSWA)
Persons must have G39/1 approval to work on the electrical network, including whoever will switch on the installation.
Deposit fee
The current deposit fee amount is shown on our page to apply for a new installation. We will not process the application until we have received this deposit.
If your installation is not removed within 5 days of its end date, we will remove it and send you an invoice for full costs.
