How we process applications
We follow statutory guidance issued by the government when processing animal licensing applications. Go to GOV.UK: Animal activity licensing process – statutory guidance for local authorities.
When we receive an application and payment of the fee, we will validate the application within 5 working days (Monday to Friday, excluding public holidays). This is to make sure the application has been completed correctly and all necessary attachments have been included.
Once the application is confirmed as valid, we will arrange an inspection of the premises. All our inspectors are suitably qualified, holding a Level 3 (or equivalent) animal inspector qualification.
If you are applying for a new dog breeding licence, or a new or renewed licence for hiring out horses, we will appoint a suitably qualified vet. If the inspection relates to equines (horses), we only use approved inspectors on the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons: riding establishment inspectorate list.
After the inspection, we will issue you a decision notice. If a licence is granted, the decision notice will include your star rating. All applicants must be given a star rating ranging from 1 to 5, based on their compliance history and the results of their inspection.
We will issue the decision within 10 weeks of receiving the application.
If you are unhappy with the inspectors' decision or the star rating you are given, you can challenge the decision by writing to our Licensing team, below.
