Trading from a street market stall
You need approval to run a market stall as a trader.
There are currently 2 street markets in Thurrock:
- Grays market
- South Ockendon market
We have awarded contacts for the overall licensed operation of these street markets. If you would like to trade from a stall at any licensed market, you will need approval from its operator. You don't need to have a licence for street trading directly with us.
Grays market
Grays market is a general street market selling food, clothing, accessories, and other general goods. It usually operates on:
- Friday each week, 9am to 5pm
- Saturday each week, 9am to 5pm
Sometimes the operator may not open the market on these days – for example, if severe weather is expected. Market stalls trade in the High Street and George Street, Grays.

South Ockendon market
South Ockendon market is a general street market selling food, clothing, accessories, and other general goods. It usually operates on:
- Tuesday each week, 9am to 5pm
- Saturday each week, 9am to 5pm
Sometimes the operator may not open the market on these days – for example, if severe weather is expected. Market stalls trade between Derwent Parade and Derry Avenue, South Ockendon.

Approval to trade
To trade from a market stall, you must have current valid:
- personal identification
- public liability insurance
- certificates for food safety and food hygiene if you wish to sell cooked food
