Conservation areas in Thurrock
Conservation areas are areas of special architectural or historical interest, the character or appearance of which it is desirable to preserve or enhance.
If a place is a conservation area it does not mean that it is perfect and can’t change. It means we have recognised its special value and that any changes must respect its character.
The ‘character’ of a conservation area is created by:
- individual buildings
- grouping of buildings
- the relationship of one building to another
- the quality and character of the space between the buildings
It may include important landscapes as well as buildings. The boundary may be extended to include a field containing ancient crop marks or other archaeological features.

We strongly defend and protect Thurrock's conservation areas. The historic buildings, street patterns, trees and open spaces that you see in our conservation areas are important reminders of our architectural and historical past.
