Discretionary Housing Payment (DHP) is an extra payment to help you pay your rent and other housing costs. It is not a benefit payment, but a separate payment on top of housing benefit.

Housing costs can be the difference between your housing benefit and the actual rent you pay.
Who gets DHP
You can get DHP if you are already getting housing benefit but still need more help paying your housing costs because:
- your income is too high to qualify for full housing benefit
- you have an adult living with you (your partner is not included)
- you rent is too high
